Finding halal, vegetarian and other dietary-friendly food
By the Food Hunter team · Updated October 2026
How to check halal certification, find vegetarian stalls and stay safe with allergies.
Halal: look for the certificate
Halal-certified stalls display an official certificate: MUIS in Singapore, and JAKIM (or a state religious authority) in Malaysia. 'Muslim-owned' and 'no pork no lard' are not the same as certified. If certification matters to you, look for the certificate at the stall.
Food Hunter can favour halal-friendly places when you set your diet to Halal, but online information can be out of date — always check at the stall.
Vegetarian and vegan
Chinese vegetarian stalls (often with 'su shi' or '斋' signage) serve meat-free versions of classic dishes. Indian vegetarian restaurants are another reliable choice. For vegan, ask about egg, dairy and fish sauce.
Allergies
Peanuts, shellfish and soy are common in local cooking, and many stalls share woks and oil. Tell the cook directly. No app, including Food Hunter, can guarantee a dish is allergen-free.
