7 signs a food stall is genuinely good
By the Food Hunter team · Updated October 2026
Ratings can be gamed. Here is what experienced food hunters look at before they join a queue.
1. A short menu
Stalls that do one or two dishes well usually beat stalls with 40 items. A focused menu means fresher ingredients and a cook who has repeated the dish thousands of times.
2. Reviews that mention specific dishes
'Great food!' tells you little. Reviews that say 'the wok hei on the hor fun' or 'the sambal is made in-house' come from people who actually ate there. Food Hunter shows review snippets so you can judge this yourself.
3. Many ratings, not just a high rating
A 4.9★ from 12 reviews is less reliable than a 4.4★ from 1,200. Use the Popular filter to only see places with plenty of reviews.
4. Regulars over tourists
Watch who is queueing. Uniforms from nearby offices, families and older residents are a good sign the stall is worth repeat visits, not just a one-off photo.
5. Food made to order
Noodles cooked per bowl and rice dishes fried per plate are worth a short wait. Trays of food sitting under a heat lamp for hours rarely taste as good.
6. Recent posts, not just old fame
A stall famous ten years ago may have changed hands. Recent public videos and posts help you check whether it is still good today.
7. Your own past ratings
The best signal is your own taste. Rating places after you eat lets Food Hunter favour similar food next time.
