Student-friendly food: filling meals under S$5 or RM10
By the Food Hunter team · Updated October 2026
Practical tips for teenagers and students looking for cheap, filling food at hawker centres and coffee shops.
Where your money goes furthest
Hawker centres and coffee shops remain the cheapest places to eat a full meal. In Singapore, many stalls display a 'budget meal' option at a fixed low price; in Malaysia, mamak shops and economy rice (nasi campur) stalls are reliable for cheap, filling plates. Food courts in malls are usually more expensive for the same dish.
Dishes that fill you up
Economy rice lets you control the price: one meat and two vegetables over rice is a filling plate. Chicken rice, nasi lemak, fried bee hoon, roti prata and fishball noodles are usually affordable. Mixed vegetable rice with curry gravy poured over is a classic student move — just ask.
Timing tricks
Go just before the lunch rush (around 11:30am) or after 1:30pm to avoid queues. Some stalls offer cheaper prices or bigger portions near closing time. Breakfast sets at kopitiams are often the best-value meal of the day.
Drinks and extras
Drinks quickly add up. Plain water is often free at drink stalls if you ask politely, and teh or kopi is cheaper than canned or bubble tea drinks. Sharing a large plate of zi char among friends is cheaper per person than ordering separately.
