Eating your way: vegetarian, halal and allergy-aware travel
By the idk what to eat team · Updated October 2026
Practical questions for finding food that suits your diet across languages, cuisines and countries.
Names do not tell the whole story
Vegetable soups may contain meat stock; noodles may include fish sauce; pastries may use lard. Ask about broth, sauces and cooking fats rather than relying on the dish name alone. Vegetarian and vegan definitions can be interpreted differently by individual venues.
Check certification locally
For halal food, look for a current certificate from a recognised local certifier and check what it covers. A Muslim-owned sign, a no-pork menu or an online tag is not the same as certification. Certification systems differ between countries.
Prepare an allergy explanation
Bring a clearly translated statement naming your allergens and asking about cross-contact. Speak to staff before ordering; if they cannot answer confidently, choose another place. For severe allergies, follow your clinician's travel advice and keep prescribed medication accessible.
Use listings as a starting point
Search results can help you shortlist vegetarian restaurants and specialist cafes, but menus and ownership change. Confirm ingredients and preparation at the venue. No restaurant-finding app can guarantee an allergen-free meal.
